Episode 7: A Nepalese Buddhist Manuscript from Lhasa - An Overview
In this film Dr Bidur Bhattarai presents a Nepalese Buddhist manuscript that was probably produced in Lhasa (Tibet), sponsored by two Vajrācārya brothers from a nearby area of a vihāra ('monastery') of Kaṣṭhamaṇḍapanagara (‘Kathmandu city’). The copying of the text was completed in 1692 CE. This artefact is witness to the longstanding tradition of knowledge exchange and cultural and religious connection that has been existing since the past between Nepal and Tibet, in particular between Lhasa and the Kathmandu valley.

It is initiated and produced by Dr Bidur Bhattarai, Coordinator of the project ‘Preserving the Written Artefacts of Nepal’ based at the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures at Universität Hamburg. The project is generously supported by the German Foreign Office and the Gerda Henkel Foundation.
