Das Verhältnis des athenischen Magnaten Herodes Atticus zu seinen Mitbürgern war bei weitem nicht so ungetrübt, wie es die von ihm gestifteten Bauten in der Stadt vermuten lassen. Heftige Auseinandersetzungen zwischen ihm und seinen Konkurrenten wurden vor Gericht in Athen ausgetragen oder vor den Kaiser gebracht. Die literarischen und epigraphischen Quellen werfen ein bezeichnendes Licht auf die Möglichkeit, das öffentliche Ansehen durch solche Prozesse zu beeinflussen.

The first lecture series of the 'Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Ancient Law' (CISAL) will focus on the diversity of the interdisciplinary research field of Ancient Legal History. Therefore, the geographical, chronological, and typological range of the available sources will be reviewed, and approaches and methods of both disciplines evaluated. Furthermore, the invited speakers, all being renowned scholars of Ancient Law or Ancient History, will present insight into current research projects.
