Die Universität Hamburg bietet interessierten und begabten Schülerinnen und Schülern im Rahmen des Juniorstudiums die Möglichkeit, bereits neben der Schule mit einem Studium zu beginnen sowie regelmäßig an Einführungsseminaren und Vorlesungen teilzunehmen.

Im Juniorstudium werden fast alle Studiengänge angeboten, ausgenommen sind Medizin, Pharmazie, Biologie und die Chinesisch-Sprachkurse. Die meisten Studiengänge können nur zum Wintersemester aufgenommen werden.

Für die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer besteht die Möglichkeit, die im Juniorstudium erbrachten Leistungen bei einem späteren Studium anrechnen zu lassen. Da Juniorstudierende keinen studentischen Status besitzen, müssen sie auch keine Verwaltungs- und Studiengebühren bezahlen.
