Prof. Dr. LI Tana: “Maritime Vietnam: From Earliest Time to the 19th Century”
This recording shows a talk by Prof. Dr. LI Tana, Canberra. Until 2016, she has worked as a Senior Fellow at the Research School of Pacific Studies, Australian National University, Canberra. Her research focus has been originally the South of Vietnam, but has been extended to the history of Vietnam's waterways in general.
Vietnamese history has been essentialized in four words: Bắc cự, nam tiến (resist to the north, expand to the south). In this narrative, all other elements – ideologies, economy and society – were weaved around this central drive, as the key to understand Vietnamese history.
In her talk, LI Tana discussed this theme with her new book "A Maritime Vietnam: From earliest time to the 19th century" (Cambridge University Press, 2024). She explored Vietnam's place in the world in its early history, and gave four metaphors.
After the presentation, the audience had the opportunity to ask questions to the speaker or to give comments and share thoughts about the topic. The event was held online (via ZOOM) and in English.
The talk will was introduced and chaired by Prof. Dr. Thomas Engelbert (UHH).
