This video guides us through calculating the pH value of an aqueous solution in the open carbonate system (gas flux between atmosphere and water allowed. The total alkalinity of the water can be introduced into pure water by carbonates ( NaHCO3, Na2CO3, MgCO3) or Hydroxides (NaOH, Ca(OH)2, Mg(OH)2 ). There can be other forms of alkalinity in the seawater and organic-rich waters because other acid-base systems play a role in these waters. To make a simple, understandable video, I am neglecting the fugacity of the gas (assuming ideal gases). Furthermore, the temperature, pressure, and ionic strength dependence on the dissociation constants are neglected for simplicity. For more interested viewers, I recommend using my website and exploring more combinations of parameters.
