From the latter half of the 17th century to the early 20th century, Vietnamese courts sent envoys to China for diplomatic relations. Besides the diplomatic missions, these envoys also went to ceramic kilns in China to order high quality porcelain, bringing it back to Vietnam for the needs of Vietnamese courts.
This porcelain, though made in China, bears the characteristics of Vietnam, such as: Vietnamese dynastic titles; decorative motifs on these porcelains affected by Vietnamese arts; and the poems on these porcelains are written in Nôm characters. The script is Vietnamese, and the authors of these poems were Vietnamese.
This special porcelain is the product of a cooperation between Vietnamese and Chinese artists. And now, they become favorite antiques with Vietnamese and foreign collectors.
Dr. Tran Duc Anh Son is an independent scholar in Danang City (Vietnam).
He served as Vice-Director of the Danang Institute for Socio Economic Development (DISED). He also served as Vice-Director of the Hue Museum of Royal Fine Arts for 6 years (1995 - 2000), then as Director of this Museum for 7 years (2001 - 2007), as Dean of Faculty of Vietnamese Studies at Phan Chau Trinh University (2008).
He received a B.A and Ph.D. in history in 1989 and 2002, respectively. He has also had teaching experience in local universities in the following subjects: History of Vietnamese under Nguyen Dynasty (1802 - 1945), Ceramics of East Asia during 15th - 19th century, Culture of Vietnam and Hue region…
Dr. Tran Duc Anh Son was awarded scholarships to study on museology, archaeology, history of art and management of cultural heritage in Japan, Korea and Germany. He was the Fulbrighter at Yale University (AY 2015 - 2016).
