Hunting Radio Galaxies in the Outback of the Universe
The Low Frequency Array, or LOFAR for short, is a digital radio telescope that spans several European countries with its core in the Netherlands. LOFAR leads the way for a new generation of digital radio interferometers that consist of a multitude of antenna fields spread over large distances. With LOFAR, astronomers will get a glimpse at the epoch of formation of the very first stars in the universe, they will explore extragalactic magnetic fields, chart millions of galaxies, monitor solar activity and search for extrasolar planets.
LOFAR, das „Low Frequency Array”, ist ein neuartiges, digitales Radioteleskop, das sich über sechs europäische Länder erstreckt und seinen Kern in den Niederlanden hat. Die Universitäten Hamburg und Bielefeld beteiligen sich daran gemeinsam mit einer LOFAR Empfangsstation in Norderstedt. LOFAR ist das erste einer neuen Generation von Radioteleskopen und Vorläufer des „Square Kilometre Array” (SKA). Es arbeitet in dem bisher weitgehend unerforschten Frequenzbereich zwischen ~10 MHz und ~240 MHz. Dieser Bereich entspricht Wellenlängen zwischen 1,2 und 20 Metern. Die Radioastronomie-Gruppe an der Hamburger Sternwarte um Prof. Marcus Brüggen nutzt LOFAR intensiv für ihre Untersuchungen von Galaxien-Haufen.
